Since 2013, the Residential Tenancy Act 1997 has required owners to install working smoke alarms in all residential premises to which the Act applies. These requirements apply to all existing buildings that are tenanted.
These laws are here to protect you and your family from fire within your property.
There is a shared responsibility between you, as the tenant, and your Property Manager to keep your smoke alarms maintained. Prior to you occupying your rental property, the Property Manager should have completed any necessary smoke alarm maintenance or servicing requirements for alarms in that home. Safe as Houses are working with Property Managers to bring all existing properties up to date with the legislation.
